The article is dedicated to the analysis of the existing lay justice types. The author employs a historical retrospective to identify the characteristics inherent to a specific lay justice type and to trace their development up to the present day. The article reviews the historical aspect of the organization and functioning of lay justice in tsarist Russia. The paper characterizes its legal regulation and development during the judicial reform in the Russian Federation. Some results are summarized.
