Thе article examines the main stages of the codification of Swedish law. The author characterizes the first written sources of Swedish law — regional laws adopted in XIII century. Then the author analyses two main codified sources of law in medieval Sweden — the Country Law (Landslag) and the City Law (Stadslag), adopted in XIV century. The role of the Swedish Law of the Realm of 1734, which influenced significantly on the formation of modern Swedish law and which was included in the so-called “cultural canon” of Sweden in 2025, is described. Special attention is given to the civil law reform of the first half of XIX century — the draft of the new Civil Code of 1826, its content, and the reasons for its rejection.
