An analysis of the process for ordering forensic examinations in legal proceedings allowed the author to identify typical errors made by investigators and judges. The article reveals the nature of ordering forensic examinations as a complex procedural action. The main types of errors are systematized. These include procedural, tactical, technical, and psychological (psychological and ethical) ones. To prevent errors, the need for improved training and advanced training for law enforcement officers is emphasized. The author has developed an algorithm for commissioning forensic examinations, which could be enshrined in the new law on forensic activities and in clarifications from the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to ensure uniformity of practice.
