The article examines and presents the contribution of Professor V.I. Vasiliev to the formation and development of the legal doctrine of local self-government. The main stages and significant milestones of V.I. Vasiliev's scientific developments are chronologically described. The article demonstrates the scientist's early research on the problems of democratic centralism, the implementation of the principle of collectivity as one of the fundamental principles of the organization and functioning of local councils, the formation and organization of local authorities.
