The article discusses debatable issues related to the institution of life imprisonment. Despite the harsh criticism of life imprisonment, society and the legal system find themselves in some difficulty in finding other forms of punishment capable of ensuring an adequate level of public safety and performing punitive functions against particularly serious criminals. Within the framework of this study, some topical issues of the institution of life imprisonment, conclusions are drawn, and possible solutions to the problems of the institution of life imprisonment are proposed.
