This article is devoted to the problem of combating extremism. This requires both an understanding of the phenomenon of extremism itself and the identification of its value-based and ideological foundations. In the context of modern late-capitalist society, it is legal ideology, based on conventional values, that serves as the foundation for countering extremism at the value-based and ideological level. The work utilizes dialectical, systemic, and logical methods. A socio-axiological approach is applied to understanding law, combining sociological and axiological methodologies, with the former taking precedence and a materialistic understanding of values. The author concludes that countering extremist ideology, based on values positioned as absolute, is essential in countering extremism. The system of conventional legal values and the legal ideology based on them play a key role in such counteraction within modern society, creating anti-extremist conditions for the formation of public consciousness. However, ensuring the effectiveness of the system of legal values and legal ideology is associated with a correct understanding and effective implementation of the ideological function of the state.
