Development of the "Legal Psychology" Science in the Russian Empire in the Late 19th to the Early 20th Century
Annotation
The study reveals that at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, scientists increasingly shifted toward experimental psychological methods, driven by the extensive development of diverse scientific research in psychiatry. More and more Russian scholars sought to defend their scientific positions regarding the need for legal psychology to continue its scientific development on an interdisciplinary basis. Among other things, they substantiated objective methods for studying mental phenomena and outlined strategies for conducting comprehensive studies of mental phenomena. They also offered a perspective on criminal behavior from a psychological perspective. At the same time, Russian scholars advocated the mandatory inclusion of this discipline in the acquisition of legal knowledge. During this historical period, scientific advances in legal psychology, which typically represented the most recent scientific research of the time, were actively and successfully implemented in practice. The development of this scientific field involved the active development of its methods and their implementation in law enforcement. The conclusion is that the active development of the field of “Forensic Psychology” at the turn of the last century was primarily driven by key trends in the formation of the public sphere, which were focused on upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens.
