This article examines the current issues of the financial and economic support of notarial activity in the Russian Federation in the context of the notariat’s performance of public functions. The article analyzes the principle of the notariat’s self-financing. Particular attention is paid to the absence of effective compensation mechanisms for financial losses incurred by notaries when granting statutory benefits to certain categories of citizens and providing free legal aid. Based on an analysis of legislation, statistical data, and a comparative legal study of the regulation of the notariat and the legal profession, the author substantiates the conclusion that there is an imbalance between the scope of public functions entrusted to notaries and the existing system of financial and economic guarantees. The author concludes that compensation mechanisms should be improved by expanding the list of notarial acts for which notaries are entitled to reimbursement of financial losses arising from the provision of statutory benefits and free legal aid.
