The Cognitive Approach as a Resource for the Development of the Instrumental Psychophysiological Interview Methodology within the Framework of Criminal Intelligence and Surveillance Operations
Annotation
The need to develop a methodology for conducting instrumental psychophysiological questioning is due to two factors: 1) the lag between the methods used and the achievements in theoretical and applied psychology, and 2) high availability of information for the examined persons about possible ways to counteract polygraph testing. The theoretical analysis indicates the underestimation of modern cognitive theories and the results of neuroscience research, as well as their potential as a basis for improving polygraph testing methods and using of other technical tools. A pilot study conducted showed that it is possible to capture spikes in cognitive load at the moment of lying, even when the average level of cognitive load during testing is low.
