The long-standing cooperation between Europe and Russia, particularly in the field of energy, collapsed with the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022. Russia, once the main supplier of natural gas as well as an important partner in other energy segments, is no longer perceived by the administration in Brussels as a desirable partner. It seems that this decision, whether intentionally or not, is currently supported by the majority of the member states of the European Union. It remains to be seen whether economic and trade relations can be restored after the end of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as in the context of an increasingly complex geopolitical situation and new «hot spots» in the world. Beyond the political decision of the European Union to abandon the use of Russian energy resources, one can also notice a shift in Moscow’s foreign policy towards the East, which is becoming increasingly evident in its orientation toward new markets and trading partners in that region of the world. Through this prism of relations between Brussels and Moscow, Serbia’s position regarding the continuation of energy cooperation with Russia should also be analyzed.
