Purpose. To analyze artificial intelligence development trends, features of its legal regulation, to study the opportunity and risks of its use by postgraduate students in research. Methodology. The study is carried out based on a set of general scientific and special methods, inter alia, the formal logic method, including analysis, synthesis, comparison, system approach, forecasting method. Conclusion. Along with acknowledging the opportunity for postgraduate students to use artificial intelligence as an auxiliary research tool, the framework for its use should be developed and codified in legal acts. Scientific and practical relevance. A study of the opportunity for postgraduate students to use artificial intelligence in research will make it possible to identify legal and ethical aspects of regulation of application of artificial intelligence in preparation of theses and development of research competences of postgraduate students.
