Organization of Internships for Lawyers in Continental Law Countries

Annotation

The method of transferring skills through apprenticeship dates back to early civilization. The practice has existed in many fields and for many hundreds of years. Apprenticeship is one of the few employment institutions of the medieval era that has survived to the present day and is still recognizable today. The benefits of the internship or apprenticeship model for young candidates for admission to the bar continue to be widely recognized in many countries around the world. Many countries, particularly those belonging to the continental legal system, continue to require compliance with this essential component of practice as a condition of licensing a person to practice law. This article examines the requirements for the organization and conduct of internships for candidates for admission to the bar in the leading countries of continental Europe - Germany, France, Italy and Belgium. It is concluded that in the countries of continental law the internship of future lawyers is an integral component of the system of preparation for admission to the bar.
